Happy Thanksgiving Eve, friends! I cannot believe the holiday is actually tomorrow. I was fortunate enough to be able to work our part day from home today, so am just doing some last minute cleaning/packing before we head home to Florida tomorrow. Not only is it Thanksgiving, which is a HUGE holiday in my family (it’s a huge tradition as the story goes my grandma, great aunt and great uncle arrived at Ellis Island with their family on Thanksgiving day!), but one of my cousin’s is also getting married in St. Pete on Saturday! So, this Thanksgiving is going to be bigger than ever – I’m talking probably 50-60 people+.
Our Thanksgiving is usually pretty casual, and since I’m flying in right at dinner time, I’ll probably wear something on the more casual side. For those of you are still looking for something to wear, I’m rounding up a few of my fave outfits for transitional fall weather — so whether you’re holidays are celebrated in Chicago or Florida, or somewhere weather-wise in between, this should have you covered!
Holiday Outfits for Cooler-Weather
Poncho, Jeans & Ankle Boots
I don’t own many ponchos, but I couldn’t resist this festive one from local boutique North & Hudson. The beauty of North and Hudson, if you haven’t seen my posts about them before, is that they custom-make everything! You can choose your fabric and color and they customize the design to fit you! They also have a bunch of ponchos, vests and cardigans that you can take off the rack if you happen to be passing through their locations in Chicago, or you can use them as an example to go off of. Ponchos are pretty great for Thanksgiving since they can hide any sort of food baby you develop after seconds and dessert! I’m also loving this one and this one from Nordstrom.
I love this look with these jeans which I got on major sale at Saks (more below), but I also love this poncho with leather leggings and booties too. PS – Saks is having 40% off all designer collections!
All-White/Neutral Outfit with Ankle Boots
As you saw in this recent post, I do not think white is reserved for summer months only. I love a head-to-toe neutral look like this one, and if you do it right with a cozy sweater and stretchy jeans like these, you won’t have to worry about feeling too restricted in your outfit and can be ready to consume all of the carbs. It’s a great combo of cozy and can be dressed up a tad with neutral ankle boots such as these. You can shop other ankle boots here.
Holiday Outfits for Warmer-Weather
Maxi Dress & Leather Jacket
For those fortunate enough to be celebrating the holidays in warmer weather like me, this is the perfect opportunity to break out one of your favorite maxis that you normally reserve for summer. Just make sure that you don’t pick a bodycon maxi dress – unless of course you don’t plan on indulging! Pair it with a leather jacket (this one is under $100!) for when the weather drops down below 70 (no joke, all of my Florida family and friends think anything below 70 is “winter weather) and you’re set.
Striped Dress, Denim Jacket and Statement Jewelry
Like I said in this post, you can never have too many striped dresses. You can honestly make them work for any occasion. For a casual Thanksgiving, opt for a looser fitting dress with a denim jacket you can throw on when the evening temps kick in. If your celebration is casual, throw on a pair of cute slide sandals. If you want to kick it up a notch, throw on a pair of ankle boots and it’ll make the outfit just slightly dressier. Don’t forget to add a pop of color with statement earrings like these (love these, too!).
Holiday Sales – Score Four Staples on Major Sale
So, since you’re reading my blog, you likely already know that I believe in a less is more approach when it comes to fashion. If you invest in quality staples, you’ll never run into the situation of a closet full of nothing to wear. I haven’t always been this way, but recently adapted to this way of thinking over the past couple of years as I slowly clean out my closet. Think: Kon Marie Method, but without the perfectly folded clothes in drawers, haha! I’m not saying you shouldn’t purchase fun, trendy items, too! I’ve just found that by investing in quality staples and then dabbling with a few cheaper trendier items to test out, you’ll likely be much happier with your wardrobe, which will translate into confidence in your appearance (at least it does for me!).
So, about those sales… here are a few items I’ve found already on sale this holiday season that I either recommend or am planning to get myself!
High-Waisted Skinny Ankle Jeans: A pair of well-fitted jeans are essential when you’re building out a wardrobe. Being petite, finding a pair of jeans at the right length is hard enough, but finding some that are the right length AND high-waisted is nearly impossible. That’s why I was so happy when Lauren of Lake Shore Lady recommended these J. Brand jeans on her Instagram. I love that they hit me at my natural waist and aren’t too tight like most skinny jeans are. Also, they actually feel like jeans, not jeggings, which I haven’t experienced in a while. They fit me at the right length for jeans, but I honestly may hem them this summer so they can hit me at the “ankle” length once it warms up! If you’re 5’3 or above though, these will be perfect on you. Other than that, these run TTS. I’ve also heard amazing things about Madewell’s short jeans and I just ordered a pair to test out for myself – I’ll keep you all posted! Also, Madewell is having a big sale right now – everything is 25% off!
Silk Cami: A silk cami is great to have, especially in black, because it is so versatile. You can wear with jeans like the ones listed above, or pair it with a skirt, throw on a blazer for a more conservative look or throw on a leather jacket for something a little more casual. I love this one from Ann Taylor because it comes in regular and petite. Also, Ann Taylor is having 50% off everything right now!
Ankle Boots: During fall/winter, a good pair of ankle boots should be in your closet no matter where you with. You can wear them with jeans, skirts, dresses and even maxi dresses if you’re living in a warmer climate. I love this pair by Hinge, and even better, they come in several colors. I have the “Taupe Sport Suede” and find they go with pretty much everything. Also, what I love about them is that the heel is high enough to dress up an outfit, but low enough to run around in and still feel semi casual. These run TTS. Right now they are 33% off at Nordstrom (also, Nord is having a sale – 20% off select sale items).
Cocoon Coat: When I moved to Chicago, I literally had one coat that we bought before I moved to Gainesville at the very last minute from Burlington Coat Factory! I had no idea at the time where to buy coats and I barely ever needed to wear this one. Flash forward to now, and my coat collection is growing – one for every season! I finally upgraded this year for my everyday fall coat for J. Crew’s cocoon style. Truth be told, I ended up getting the J. Crew Factory version, but with 40% off, I’d definitely splurge for the J. Crew cocoon one. It’s so chic with the standup collar and I love the way it looks with and without a scarf. J. Crew Factory is also having a sale – 50% off everything!
Well, there you have it! Hope this was helpful and I hope you all have a very Happy and carb-filled Thanksgiving!
