Happy Wedding Wednesday, friends! It’s been a bit since I’ve shared a wedding update, but I’m so excited to share this update with everyone now that our plane tickets have been purchased!
For those of you who don’t know, this has been a long time in the making. I won’t belabor you with all the nitty gritty details, but choosing a location has been incredibly difficult, and not only that, but wedding planning has not been the most fun process. I feel like over the years, weddings have more and more become about all of the other people except for the couple getting married.
We decided from the very beginning that we did not want to make it about anyone else, and it’s of those times in your life where you truly need to be selfish and try to take everyone else’s opinions (because trust me, there will be tons of them – even people you didn’t think would have one will have one) with a grain of salt. We’ve chosen to make this wedding about celebrating our love for each other and the life we have ahead, and are so excited and grateful to those who are able to and have decided to join us in this once-in-a-lifetime adventure! I digress, but just know that if you are planning a wedding and thinking you are the only one out there struggling with it or just downright not having fun – you are not alone! I feel you, girl!
Being that Dave and I are both from different states, we knew early on that we would have people traveling to wherever we chose to get married. Since we were living in Chicago at the time, we briefly looked into that, but honestly, getting married in Chicago will cost a very pretty penny and we quickly knew that wasn’t going to work for us – especially since we were in the market to purchase our first home. We then looked into both of our home states – Florida and Ohio, but again, we just were not comfortable with the price tag (that’s a down payment on a home!). When we finally decided those states were out, we knew a destination wedding was for us.
For quite a while, we had our hearts set on Jamaica or somewhere tropical – I had always wanted a wedding on the water and something about Jamaica seemed tranquil. Not to mention, we would barely have to do a thing! Then we remembered the word that plagues every 30-something couple looking to vacation – Zika. With so many of our friends/family at this stage of our lives, we knew a lot of people wouldn’t be able to make it, and not only that, with Zika still having so many unknowns, we didn’t want to take the risk either! So there we sat, back at square one.
I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t in tears – many times. I had no idea what we were going to do and eloping became a conversation that happened nearly every day. By this point, we were both so over it, it became less and less fun by the day. That’s when we knew we needed to take our wedding back and make it be about us again – about the love we have for each other and as I mentioned earlier, celebrating our love and upcoming future together. We started talking about where we wanted to honeymoon one day and then it just kind of came to us – what if we got married where we’re going to honeymoon?! It was then and there we locked in our decision.
Our Big Fat Santorini Wedding
And so, our flights are booked and we are officially getting married in Santorini, Greece (if you couldn’t tell by the photos)! I still can’t believe this is actually happening (and in just a little over four months). Once we decided we’d get married there, we knew we had to find a planner stat. We don’t speak the language, and there were so many venue locations to choose from and other decisions that needed to be made, we knew we needed someone to help get it done. After Googling for hours, we remembered WeddingWire had their vendor directory and were able to find a planner for our Santorini wedding fairly quickly! This woman had so many great reviews, was incredibly responsive, reasonably priced and set up a Skype call with us straight away.

Working with our planner, we were able to narrow down our ceremony and reception venues for our Santorini wedding pretty quickly. We really only had one stipulation, and she was able to easily meet it: we wanted to get married overlooking the caldera and have amazing views all night long. Our planner found us the perfect venues – Santo Winery for our ceremony and Pyrgos Restaurant for our reception. Not only are the views amazing, but so many friends and just random people I’ve spoken with have told me that Santo is a must-do if you’re in Santorini, so needless to say, I’m pretty excited that we chose it to be the place we exchange our vows.
